'Google postpones the announcement of 'GPT-4 competitor.''
Google has reportedly postponed the announcement of its language model, Gemini AI, which was anticipated to compete with GPT-4. According to insider sources cited by The Information, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai requested the delay of Gemini's launch until the next year. The initial plan was to unveil the language model during events held in California, New York, and Washington this month.
Gemini, developed by Google DeepMind, was introduced in May at the Google I/O 2023 event. It is considered Google's "most serious effort" in the AI generation. Sergey Brin, Google's co-founder, returned to the company to boost the development of Gemini.
Gemini, similar to GPT-4 in functionality, is described as ambitious but reportedly less effective in languages other than English. Sources revealed that Gemini lags behind GPT-4 in multilingual recognition and feedback capabilities, requiring further improvement.
Google had previously highlighted Gemini's impressive multimodal information processing capabilities, especially in integrating with tools and APIs. The company planned to deploy various versions of Gemini across services like Bard, Search, Workspace, and a mobile version named Gecko.
According to Interesting Engineering, Gemini could be one of Google's most significant products upon release, showcasing the company's ability to compete and potentially surpass OpenAI. The trend is shifting from traditional platforms to chatbots, and Gemini is positioned as a key player.
Currently, no company has deployed an AI model comparable to OpenAI's GPT-4. Many products on the market are equivalent to GPT-3.5. In August, experts from SemiAnalysis predicted that Google Gemini would outperform GPT-4 with less GPU usage.
In the last month, OpenAI released the GPT-4 Turbo upgrade, offering higher speed and cost efficiency. CEO Sam Altman also revealed the breakthrough GPT-5 model, expected to be introduced next year.
